(follow-on to Why I don't use my domain ISP's mail)
Our Internet access through our ISP has been down all day. (I'm using WirelessPhiladelphia right now, at half the speed but it's up.)
bensanaz checked the router. It's OK.
dunkelpig called the company. Their recording says, "We are currently experiencing problems in the Philadelphia area. [So, well, we know it's not just us.] For more information, log in to speakeasy.com."
Hey, guys, there's just a little problem with that!

| Summon cat |
[Jul. 6th, 2008|12:24 pm] |
- 1/2 level spell
- Physical component: Shaking a container of dry cat food to produce a loud noise.
- Verbal component: Pss-pss-pss! or Here, kitty, kitty! or other possibilities. It really doesn't matter and usually isn't even necessary.
- Material component: Some chow will be consumed by the summoned cat. Failure to provide for this may result in the spell's failure next time and/or injury to the caster this time (saving throw at -3, or 1-3hp damage)
- Effect: The house cat will come running at top speed toward the caster, who had better be ready to provide the material component (see above).
We've tried to get a video, so far without results: she moves too fast. She rockets out of the bedroom and comes down the stairs three steps at a time. (Fifteen steps, THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!) |

Cryo Ruggie and kr1mz0n_ghoti Convergence 7/3/08 As I was carrying a copy of Rune 78 (from 1988) for a panel on Minnesota fan history, I ran into one of the contributors! Cryo Ruggie was active on BBSes, local dial-up Citadels, and his son was just getting into the on-line world.
(Note Convergence program schedule along the wall on far right. It's a four five day convention, and it's not over...) |

| Morning |
[Jul. 6th, 2008|07:40 am] |
No idea when the Wolfling's party broke up last night; we old fogeys went
to bed around 11:30 or so, if I remember correctly. I got up 7ish -- so
much for needing only 5 hours' sleep. We got in some good cuddle, though.
Since the sewing room, which would normally serve as a guest room, is
currently full of sewing and assorted other clutter, we finally made use
of the curtains we bought back in February; these partition off part of
the living room (the part that used to be the master bedroom, in fact) to
give guests sleeping on the couch a little privacy. The couch has two
foam cushions that fit together on the floor to make a king-sized bed.
I need to watch out for parties: I put on a couple of pounds, even with my
clever substitution of lettuce-leaf wraps for hamburger buns. The slices
of baguette with either olive oil or cheese, not to mention the birthday
cake, probably made up for it.

| I've got my helmet on, nothing can do me wrong |
[Jul. 5th, 2008|11:57 pm] |
Just got out of the Bobs concert at Freight & Salvage. They brought back Gunnar Madsen, one of the original Bobs, to perform with them. Heavenly! It's been 15 years, but Gunnar's still in top form. Perhaps the show could have been tighter -- you don't often see Matthew Bob grump about how much goofing around they do on stage -- but it's fun to watch them crack each other up and make silly jokes. After 25 years, who can begrudge them whatever they need to keep it fresh? Not I. Vocally they remain delightful. My roomie will be green with jealousy that he missed Gunnar performing "Welcome To My Fog"; they also performed "Helmet," one of my own favorites.
One of the guys sitting next to me, an Israeli who was clearly in town for some portion of the Pride Weekend*, mentioned that he saw a version of the Bobs' "Psycho Killer" as part of a dance performance in Israel maybe 15 years ago, and he hoped to hear them perform that song tonight. He wasn't disappointed either. By the end of the evening we couldn't stop smiling. An excellent reward for a week of hard work.
_____ *By which I mean that he said he was "in San Francisco for..." and then stopped himself. His boyfriend appeared to be American, and they were very cute together. By the time I thought to look for rings, they'd already gone. |

OK, wtf did I do to my left knee? Grumble.
Apart from that, it's been a pretty quiet day, spent entirely at home
except for an hour's walk around the Rose Garden at 12:30.
The chaoswolf has been having a quiet barbecue/potluck party
to celebrate her birthday (a day early); I got stuck doing the barbecuing,
of course. Not too bad; chipuni came out to keep me company,
and we had a good conversation, if a little short. Made some of Colleen's
infamous onion-and-blue-cheese burgers; yummy, but they tend to make a
mess all over whatever you're cooking on. Somebody will have to
clean the grill.
What time I haven't spent cooking or walking has been spent puttering
around the website; steve.savitzky.net/Songs/ is now basically complete, with all the
links fixed. (I'll need to do a little more work before I add any more
songs; there's no code to add new song directories at present.) But at
least it's functional, and the links on the lyrics pages are right. Other
parts of the site are mostly functional.
Publishing is still messed up; basically nobody but me can maintain it at
the moment. That's ok for now, but there are other sites in the same tree
that will need to have other people working on them.

| Two Small PSAs |
[Jul. 5th, 2008|02:06 pm] |
1. Back up your data. Don't wait, do it now.
2. Clarion West had several laptops (and other stuff) stolen, and at least one person wasn't fully backed up. (Thus leading to PSA #1 above). Per another blog post, here's a note from Clarion West staff:
We have temporary loaners for the students, and people been donating to a fund to replace the machines. Spreading the word [i]s really helpful--we're gathering the info about the machines to trace them if they show up on ebay or Craig's list, and if people ask you how to donate, they can use our paypal@clarionwest.org address if they use PayPal. Ask them to note there that it's a donation toward the lost computers, because we have the write-a-thon and other things going on. Otherwise a check to Clarion West at our mail address will work: Clarion West, 340 Fifteenth Avenue East, Suite 350, Seattle, WA 98112, and again, please ask them to note what this is for so we can keep the funds separate. |

I've cut the list down to the last 30 years, in part because I wanted to list only the movies I finished watching. Among those I couldn't stand watching: LotR et seq. I've also added a comment next to my favorites.
In general, the kinds of movies that get best picture nominations are the ones I don't enjoy watching, e.g. Good Night, and Good Luck.
Funny story about The Insider -- we'd watched almost the entire movie when the SWAT team cleared out the theatre. No matter how paranoid the ending was, it couldn't beat the actual experience, so I never went back to see the very ending.

[Jul. 4th, 2008|11:01 pm] |
I've been feeling both tired and restless all afternoon, and a little bit
subdued as well. Odd. Subdued much of the week; it may be just a
reaction to preceeding week's emotional high. Perhaps I'm getting back to
what passes for normal these days. I'm not going to worry about it too
much.
Got my walkies in around 5pm (Rose Garden); that could explain
some of the tiredness, though I was a little tired before I
started.
In other news, I've just found out that Janis Ian's autobiography is due out on July 24th, along with a 2 CD "best of"
set. Yes, of course I've ordered it.
